Cat Grooming at Home: A Complete Guide

Cat Grooming at Home: A Complete Guide

Tin's Spa Day Secrets

Cats are self-groomers, but they still need your help. Regular grooming prevents hairballs, mats, and skin issues โ€” plus it's quality bonding time.

Brushing

Short-haired cats: Once a week with a rubber brush or grooming glove. Long-haired cats: Daily brushing with a slicker brush to prevent mats. Always brush in the direction of hair growth.

Nail Trimming

Trim every 2-3 weeks. Use sharp cat nail clippers. Press the paw pad gently to extend the claw. Cut only the transparent tip โ€” avoid the pink quick (blood vessel). If you nick it, styptic powder stops bleeding instantly.

Ear Cleaning

Check weekly. Healthy ears are pink and odor-free. If you see dark wax or smell something off, use a vet-approved ear cleaner on a cotton ball. Never insert anything into the ear canal.

Dental Care

80% of cats over 3 have dental disease. Use a cat-specific toothbrush and enzymatic toothpaste (never human toothpaste). Even just rubbing toothpaste on their teeth with your finger helps.

Bathing

Most cats never need baths. If yours does (got into something messy), use lukewarm water and cat-specific shampoo. Have towels ready โ€” you'll need them for the inevitable escape attempt.

Our Self-Cleaning Slicker Brush makes grooming sessions easier. Tin actually purrs through her brushings now.
