Dog Walking 101: Tips for Safer, Happier Walks
Making Every Walk Count
Walking Tum used to be a workout โ for us, not him. After years of trial and error, here's what actually works for enjoyable walks.
Before You Head Out
Check the weather. In summer, test the pavement with your palm โ if it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for paws. Walk early morning or after sunset. In winter, consider dog booties or paw wax for salt and ice protection.
Leash Basics
A 6-foot fixed leash gives you control during training. Save the retractable leash for open spaces where your dog can safely explore. Never use a retractable leash near roads.
The 'Stop and Be a Tree' Technique
When your dog pulls, stop walking completely. Don't pull back โ just become a tree. Wait until the leash goes slack, then continue. Your dog learns: pulling = we stop; loose leash = we go.
Sniff Breaks Are Important
Let your dog sniff! It's how they read the neighborhood newsletter. Designate specific sniff zones during your walk โ balance between structured walking and exploration.
Night Walk Safety
- LED collar or light-up leash โ makes your dog visible to cars
- Reflective vest โ for you too
- Stick to well-lit routes โ familiar paths only after dark
