How Often Should You Really Bathe Your Dog?
The Great Bath Debate
Tum gets a bath once a month โ unless he rolls in something questionable, which happens more often than we'd like. But how often should you really bathe your dog?
General Guidelines
Most dogs: Once every 4-6 weeks. Active outdoor dogs: Every 2-4 weeks. Indoor couch potatoes: Every 6-8 weeks. Dogs with skin conditions: As prescribed by your vet (could be weekly with medicated shampoo).
Signs Your Dog Needs a Bath
- Visible dirt or mud
- Noticeable odor (beyond normal "dog smell")
- Oily or greasy coat
- Excessive scratching (could indicate dirty skin or allergies)
Over-Bathing Problems
Bathing too frequently strips natural oils from your dog's coat, leading to dry skin, irritation, and increased oil production (making them smell worse, not better).
Bath Time Tips
- Use lukewarm water โ not hot, not cold
- Use dog-specific shampoo (human shampoo has wrong pH)
- Wet thoroughly before applying shampoo
- Rinse completely โ leftover soap causes itching
- Dry with towel first, then low-heat dryer if needed
- Give a treat after โ positive association makes future baths easier
Between-Bath Freshening
Dog wipes for paws and face after walks. Dry shampoo spray for a quick refresh. Brushing removes loose dirt and distributes natural oils.
Tum tolerates baths because treats are involved. Your dog will too.
