How to Build the Perfect Litter Box Setup
Tin's Bathroom Standards
Cats are particular about their bathroom. Get the litter box wrong, and they'll find their own spot โ usually your laundry basket. Here's how to get it right.
The N+1 Rule
One litter box per cat, plus one extra. In different locations. This prevents territorial disputes and ensures there's always a clean option available.
Box Size
The box should be 1.5 times the length of your cat (nose to tail base). Most commercial boxes are too small. Large storage containers (with one side cut down for entry) make excellent, affordable litter boxes.
Covered vs Uncovered
Most cats prefer uncovered โ better ventilation, easier escape routes, and they can see approaching threats (other cats, toddlers). Covered boxes trap odors inside, which cats hate even more than you hate the smell outside.
Litter Type
Clumping clay: Most popular. Easy to scoop. Heavy. Dusty. Crystal/silica: Absorbs well. Low dust. Pricier. Natural (corn, walnut, pine): Eco-friendly. Some cats reject the texture.
Most cats prefer unscented, fine-grained clumping litter. Scented litter is for humans โ cats have 14x more smell receptors than us and find it overwhelming.
Cleaning Schedule
- Scoop: Daily (minimum) โ twice daily is ideal
- Full change: Every 2-4 weeks
- Deep clean: Monthly with unscented soap and hot water (no bleach or ammonia)
Placement
Quiet, low-traffic areas. Not next to food or water. Easy access โ no jumping or climbing required for senior cats. One on each floor of multi-story homes.
