How to Help Your Dog Overcome Separation Anxiety
When Tum Couldn't Let Go
After adopting Tum, he howled every time we left the house. Separation anxiety is real, it's stressful โ and it's fixable.
Signs of Separation Anxiety
- Excessive barking or howling when alone
- Destructive chewing (doors, furniture, shoes)
- Pacing or drooling
- Accidents despite being house-trained
- Escape attempts (scratching at doors/windows)
What NOT to Do
Don't punish. They're not being "bad" โ they're panicking. Punishment increases anxiety.
Don't make departures dramatic. Long goodbyes signal that leaving is a big deal. Keep it casual.
Step-by-Step Desensitization
- Practice short absences. Leave for 1 minute. Return calmly. Gradually increase duration.
- Create positive associations. Give a special treat (puzzle toy stuffed with peanut butter) only when you leave.
- Establish departure cues. Pick up keys, put on shoes โ but don't leave. Repeat until these triggers become boring.
- Exercise before departure. A tired dog is a calmer dog. Walk them before you leave.
Calming Aids
Calming music or TV (yes, dogs watch TV), DAP diffusers (dog appeasing pheromone), anxiety wraps, and in severe cases, consult your vet about medication.
Tum still prefers us at home. But now he naps peacefully while we're away. That's progress.
