How to Read Cat Body Language Like a Pro
Tin's Silent Conversations
Tin rarely meows at other cats โ meowing is something cats developed specifically to communicate with humans. But her body tells us everything we need to know.
The Tail
Straight up: Happy, confident, saying hello. Puffed up: Frightened, trying to look bigger. Low and tucked: Anxious or submissive. Slowly swaying: Focused, about to pounce. Twitching at the tip: Mildly irritated โ stop whatever you're doing.
The Ears
Forward: Interested, alert. Flat back (airplane ears): Scared or aggressive โ give space immediately. Rotating like satellite dishes: Listening to something โ probably a bug you can't see.
The Eyes
Slow blink: "I love you" โ blink back slowly to return the gesture. Dilated pupils: Excited, playful, or frightened (context matters). Narrowed eyes: Content and relaxed. Direct stare: Challenge or threat in cat language.
Body Posture
Belly up: Trust (but probably not a belly rub invitation โ it's a trap for most cats). Arched back with fur up: Defensive. Rubbing against you: Marking you with their scent โ you're their property now.
The Head Bonk
When your cat bumps their head against you, it's called "bunting." It deposits pheromones from glands on their forehead. It means "you're mine, and I feel safe." It's the highest compliment a cat can give.
Tin's favorite move? The slow blink from across the room. It means "I chose you."
