Moving With Pets: A Stress-Free Transition Guide
When Home Changes
Pets are creatures of habit. Moving disrupts their entire world. When we moved with Tum and Tin, we learned that preparation makes all the difference.
Before the Move
- Keep routines consistent. Feeding times, walk schedules, play sessions โ maintain normalcy
- Introduce moving boxes gradually. Don't suddenly fill your home with boxes โ it's alarming. Let pets sniff and investigate them
- Update ID tags and microchip info with your new address before moving day
- Ask your vet for records and research vets near your new home
Moving Day
- Secure your pet. A separate room with food, water, bed, and a "DO NOT OPEN" sign on the door. Or board them for the day
- Transport safely. Dogs in a crate or seat belt harness. Cats in a secure carrier โ never loose in the car
- Bring familiar items: their bed, favorite toy, and a blanket that smells like home
At the New Home
For dogs: Walk them around the neighborhood first. Then explore the house together, room by room.
For cats: Set up a base camp room with all essentials. Let them adjust to that one room for 3-7 days before opening up the rest of the house.
Post-Move Blues
Some pets may hide, refuse food, or have accidents in the first week. This is normal. Extra patience, familiar scents, and sticking to routines help them settle.
Tum adjusted in 2 days. Tin took 2 weeks. Both are happily at home now. Patience is love.
