Pet-Friendly Houseplants That Are Safe for Dogs and Cats
Green Spaces, Safe Pets
Tin chews everything green. After she nibbled on a pothos (toxic to cats!) and we rushed to the vet, we overhauled our entire plant collection. Here's the safe list.
Safe Houseplants
- Spider Plant: Non-toxic, easy to grow, tolerates neglect. Cats may play with hanging fronds
- Boston Fern: Safe and lush. Loves humidity โ great for bathrooms
- Calathea (Prayer Plant): Non-toxic with beautiful patterned leaves
- Peperomia: Compact, pet-safe, low maintenance
- African Violet: Safe, compact, and blooms indoors
- Areca Palm: Large, dramatic, completely non-toxic
- Ponytail Palm: Fun texture, safe for pets, drought-tolerant
- Haworthia: Succulent, safe, and nearly indestructible
Toxic Plants to Remove Immediately
- Lilies: All parts are DEADLY to cats โ even pollen on their fur
- Pothos/Devil's Ivy: Causes mouth irritation and vomiting
- Sago Palm: Extremely toxic, can cause liver failure
- Philodendron: Oral irritation, drooling, difficulty swallowing
- Aloe Vera: Causes vomiting and diarrhea if ingested
- Snake Plant: Mild toxicity causing nausea
Prevention Tips
Even safe plants can cause mild stomach upset if eaten in large quantities. Provide cat grass as a safe alternative for cats who crave greens. Elevate or hang plants if your cat is a persistent nibbler.
Our home now has 12 pet-safe plants. Tin still chews them. But at least no more emergency vet visits.
