Puppy vs Adult Dog: Which Should You Adopt?
The Honest Comparison
When we adopted Tum, he was 2 years old โ past the puppy phase but still full of energy. It was the right choice for us, but every family is different.
Puppies (Under 1 Year)
Pros: You shape their personality. Strong bond from the start. Fun and adorable (obviously).
Cons: House training takes 4-6 months. Destructive chewing phase. Require constant supervision. Need socialization training. More expensive initially (vaccinations, spay/neuter, supplies).
Adult Dogs (1-7 Years)
Pros: Already house-trained (usually). Known personality โ what you see is what you get. Past destructive chewing. Lower initial costs. Easier to match to your lifestyle.
Cons: May have unknown history. Could have behavioral issues from previous homes. Bonding may take longer. Less time together overall.
Senior Dogs (7+ Years)
Pros: Calm and grateful. Low energy requirements. Already trained. Most rewarding adoption stories.
Cons: Higher medical costs. Less time together. May need mobility accommodations.
The Real Answer
Adopt the dog that matches your lifestyle, not the one that looks cutest on the adoption website. A high-energy puppy in a studio apartment with a busy owner is a recipe for frustration on both sides.
Tum was 2 when we found him โ or when he found us. Love has no age requirement.
