The Benefits of Elevated Pet Bowls
Why Height Matters at Mealtime
We switched to elevated bowls after noticing Tum straining his neck and Tin eating too fast from floor-level bowls. The difference was immediate.
Benefits for Dogs
- Better posture: Reduces strain on neck, back, and joints โ especially important for senior dogs and large breeds
- Improved digestion: Eating at a natural angle helps food travel more smoothly to the stomach
- Reduced bloat risk: Studies are mixed, but many vets recommend elevated bowls for deep-chested breeds
- Cleaner eating area: Less food spilling and sliding across the floor
Benefits for Cats
- Reduced vomiting: Tilted elevated bowls prevent cats from eating too fast and reduce regurgitation
- Whisker fatigue relief: Shallow, wide elevated bowls don't press against sensitive whiskers
- Joint comfort: Senior cats with arthritis don't have to crouch to eat
Choosing the Right Height
The bowl should be at your pet's chest/lower neck level. For dogs, measure from the floor to the top of their shoulders, then subtract 6 inches. For cats, 4-6 inches of elevation is usually perfect.
