The Complete Guide to Pet-Proofing Your Home

The Complete Guide to Pet-Proofing Your Home

Making Your Home Safe for Four Paws

Before Tum joined our family, we didn't think twice about leaving chocolate on the counter or keeping cleaning supplies under an unlocked sink. Here's what we learned about pet-proofing.

Kitchen

  • Secure trash cans with lids โ€” dogs are dumpster-diving experts
  • Store toxic foods out of reach (chocolate, grapes, onions, xylitol products)
  • Keep counters clear of sharp objects and hot surfaces
  • Lock cabinets with cleaning supplies

Living Room

  • Secure electrical cords โ€” puppies and kittens love to chew them
  • Remove or elevate toxic plants (lilies, pothos, sago palm)
  • Anchor bookshelves and TVs โ€” climbing cats can topple furniture
  • Keep small objects (coins, rubber bands, hair ties) picked up โ€” choking hazards

Bathroom

  • Keep toilet lids closed โ€” especially if using cleaning tablets
  • Store medications in closed cabinets โ€” a single dropped pill can be fatal
  • Remove dental floss and hair ties โ€” cats eat string-like objects (can cause intestinal blockage)

Garage & Yard

  • Antifreeze โ€” store sealed, clean spills immediately
  • Rat poison โ€” use pet-safe alternatives
  • Fertilizers and pesticides โ€” keep pets off treated lawns for 24-48 hours
  • Secure fencing โ€” check for gaps monthly

A safe home is a happy home. For Tum, Tin, and every pet who deserves to explore without danger.
