The Truth About Catnip: Is It Safe for Your Cat?
Tin's Happy Herb
The first time Tin encountered catnip, she rolled around like she'd found the meaning of life. Then she zoomed around the house for 10 minutes and fell asleep. Is this normal? Is it safe? Yes and yes.
What Is Catnip?
Nepeta cataria โ a plant in the mint family. The active compound, nepetalactone, triggers a euphoric response in about 50-70% of cats. Kittens under 6 months and about 30% of adult cats are completely unaffected.
What Happens When Cats Use It
Sniffing catnip: stimulating (rolling, rubbing, jumping, playing). Eating catnip: calming (lying down, purring, zoning out). The effect lasts 5-15 minutes, followed by a 30-minute refractory period where they're immune to it.
Is It Addictive?
No. Cats don't develop dependency or withdrawal. They simply enjoy it, then move on. Think of it like a brief, harmless mood boost.
How to Use Catnip
- Sprinkle on scratching posts โ encourages scratching in the right place
- Stuff in toys โ catnip mice are Tin's favorite
- Sprinkle on a new bed or carrier โ creates positive associations
- Use during play time โ enhances the play experience
How Much Is Too Much?
Cats self-regulate. They'll walk away when they've had enough. But for best results, offer catnip once or twice a week โ daily exposure reduces sensitivity over time.
