That night, Tum cried. Not the attention-seeking whimper of a spoiled puppy, but the genuine, gut-wrenching wail of a baby who doesn't understand why the world is dark and cold and unfamiliar.

No one expected what happened next. Tin, the cat who wouldn't let anyone touch her belly, who swatted at fingers that came too close — she padded across the hallway, squeezed through the bars of Tum's crate, and curled up against his chest.

The crying stopped.
